Allison DeHonney, Executive Director Buffalo Go Green on WBFO’s “Buffalo – What’s Next?”

“Food apartheid on the East Side of Buffalo is an issue that continues to need further discussion. In this episode, Jay Moran welcomes Author Natalie Baszile, whose latest book “We Are Each Other’s Harvest” celebrates African American Farmers, the land, and their legacy. The conversation continues with Dave Debo and (our ED/CEO) Allison DeHonney from Buffalo Go Green as they examine urban farming and barriers to food access.” Allison’s portion comes in after the half-hour but the information and interviewees before her are essential to listen and learn from, as well. Allison DeHonney, Executive Director Buffalo Go Green Inc. and Chair of the Buffalo & Erie County Food Policy Council:

feb. 25, 2022

buffalo, new york

“The quality of our food continues to change and not always in ways that are favorable to the public and certainly not for those who struggle with food insecurity and who reside in food apartheid neighborhoods. Adding a value system that is more equitable, inclusive and has a focus on nutrition is the first step in connecting the dots between the food system and health outcomes. We cannot realize more positive health outcomes if our food system remains broken and lacks an embedded value system. I am confident that the introduction of GMU 103 is step one in bridging that gap.”

Hinchey Bill Would Make NY the First State to Implement Values-Based Food Procurement that Directs Commerce Towards BIPOC Businesses & Local Farms, Prioritizes Pro-Environment, Worker, & Animal Welfare Applicants

Altamont new york

Today, at Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont, Senator Michelle Hinchey announced legislation that would give all municipal institutions in New York the option to shift their food budgets to locally-based, fair, ecologically sound, and humane food sources, making it easier for communities to buy food from businesses that meet their values. The legislation (S7534/A8580), sponsored by Hinchey in the Senate and Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes in the Assembly, would make New York the first state to institute a values-based procurement model that promotes the purchase of more sustainably produced food from local economies, especially smaller-scale farms and minority-owned businesses, ensures that suppliers’ workers are offered safe and healthy working conditions and fair compensation, that livestock receive humane care and that consumers have access to nutritious meals.

We wish to thank each of our new funders for their contribution to our fight against food apartheid and healthy living for our neighbors in need. The Tower Foundation provided a grant to start the ball rolling for our “Fresh Take” meals program, soon to launch. The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation provided essential capital to expand our greenhouse project which will provide additional food for our constituents year-round! On a side note, without even knowing, this grant has also brought in a new partner in our FVRx (Fruit & Veggie Prescription Program) – Niagara Street Pediatrics! And, we can’t forget the Dedrick Family Foundation that provided our seed money to hire an Architectural and Engineering firm – Studio T3 – to implement the plans for our future Holistic Wellness & Agricultural Education Center!

An amazing morning today on Thursday, September 16 as UB Architecture Masters Students came to visit both our sites. It’s all part of the FFAR grant Buffalo Go Green is partnering with. These students came to see the area where they will design and build a wash station and storage area when our greenhouses are fully installed – all part of our Holistic Wellness & Agricultural Education Campus! Our Executive Director led the tour and provided Q&A – Special thanks to Professor Martha Bohm, Department of Architecture, School of Architecture and Planning, University at Buffalo – @ubuffaloarchplan @BuffaloArchPlan

Bills Foundation to host new nutritional information sheets featurning players

The Bills Foundation has provided a generous grant to fund the printing of Nutrition Information and Recipes that will be handed out at all our Mobile Market sites. Each week a new veggie or fruit is featured along with nutritional information and a recipe but this season – there’s a twist! On the reverse side a Bills current or legend player will be featured providing their tips and tricks for proper nutrition. The page will also provide a photo of the player along with their number and position, making this a flyer folks will want to hold on to!

Thank you to our additional funders!

Dedrick Family Foundation, Mother Cabrini Health Foundation & Tower Foundation
